In Chhattisgarh’s Dantewada district, 71 Maoists have surrendered to security forces, 30 of whom carried a total bounty of ₹6.4 million (approximately ₹6.4 million). Regarding the surrenders, Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai stated that the “double-engine” government is committed to eliminating Naxalism by March 31, 2026, and to providing dignified rehabilitation and a better life to surrendered Maoists.
Influenced by the “Puna Margem” (Revival through Rehabilitation) surrender and rehabilitation campaign being run in the Bastar division and the “Lon Varratu” (Come Back Home) campaign being run in Dantewada district, the 71 Naxalites have surrendered.
The 71 Maoists include 21 women. Among those who surrendered are a 17-year-old boy and two minor girls aged 16 and 17. Among the surrendered Maoists, Deputy Commander Baman Madkam (30) of Platoon 2 and Manki alias Samila Mandavi (20), a member of Company 1, had a bounty of ₹8 lakh each.
Attack on Police and Other Serious Charges
Janmilitia Commander Shamila alias Somli Kawasi (25), Area Committee members Gangi alias Rohni Barse (25), Santosh Mandavi (30), and Deve alias Kavita Madavi (25) had a bounty of ₹5 lakh each. A bounty of ₹3 lakh was announced for one surrendered Maoist, ₹2 lakh each for six Maoists, ₹1 lakh each for nine Maoists, and ₹50,000 each for eight Maoists.
The surrendered Maoists are accused of attacking police teams, arson, and involvement in several other Naxalite incidents.
What did the female Maoist say?
Shamila, one of the surrendered female Maoists, said she had been active in the organization since 2009 and decided to leave due to increasing pressure from security forces and the ongoing anti-Naxal operations.
Shamila explained that her husband, Mallesh, is currently active as a Maoist commander in the northern region of Bastar. She was recently active as a Janmilitia commander in the Indravati Area Committee of the Maoists and was part of a Maoist squad involved in encounters with security personnel in the region over the past few months.
No permission to have children
Shamila said, “I married Mallesh while working in the organization. We don’t have children because it’s not allowed while working in the organization. Now I’m happy that I can live a normal life.” She last met her husband in January last year. She wrote him a letter asking him to leave the organization, but received no response.
Shamila said, “I want to ask him to surrender so we can live a normal and happy life.”
CM Vishnudev Sai expressed happiness
Chief Minister Sai wrote in a post on X, “The darkness of Naxalism is dissipating, Dantewada is changing. Our government’s new Surrender and Rehabilitation Policy 2025 and the Niyyad Nella Nar scheme have instilled new confidence in the Bastar region, including Dantewada. People misled by the false slogans of Maoist violence are now choosing the path of development and peace.”
