Manoj Zarange sat on a hunger strike at Azad Maidan in Mumbai. A delegation from the government met Manoj Zarange but the meeting was inconclusive.

Mumbai: Maratha reservation movement leader Manoj Jarange is once again on strike. A delegation from the government met Jarange on Saturday. However, this discussion held in Mumbai could not yield any result. Jarange also criticized CM Devendra Fadnavis for sending retired judge Sandeep Shinde for talks. Let us tell you that retired judge Shinde is the chairman of the committee formed by the state government to expedite the process of giving reservation to Marathas.

Hunger strike will continue

Vowing to continue the hunger strike that has been going on for two days at Azad Maidan, Jarange said, “It is not the job of Justice Shinde to issue a government resolution (GR) announcing reservation to Marathas.” The government had sent a delegation earlier in the day to talk to the Maratha leader. Jarange is demanding 10 percent reservation for Marathas under the OBC category. He wants all Marathas to be recognised as Kunbi, an agrarian caste under OBC, so that people of the community can get reservation in government jobs and education.

‘Last battle to get reservation’

Jarange said that this protest is the ‘last battle’ of the community to get reservation. The government delegation met Jarange in the afternoon. Jarange said that the committee headed by retired Justice Shinde studied the gazettes related to the issue for the last 13 months and now the time has come for the committee to submit its report so that the way is paved for Marathas to get Kunbi status. Jarange said, “Marathas in Marathwada should be declared Kunbi and they should be given reservation. For this, Hyderabad and Satara gazettes should be given the form of law.”

What did Jarange say after the meeting

After the meeting, Jarange said, “It is not the job of Justice Shinde to issue a government resolution (GR) declaring Maratha and Kunbi as the same. Sending Justice Shinde here is an insult to the government, Raj Bhavan and the state.” Shinde said that the cabinet has given in-principle approval to the Hyderabad Gazette. He said, ‘I will send the details of my talks with Jarange to the cabinet sub-committee.’

‘We only want reservation’
Jarange said, ‘We are only demanding that we get our fair share in the quota on the basis of eligibility under the Kunbi category, we do not want to get into politics. We only want reservation. The government should not test the patience of the Maratha community.’ He said, ‘We are not demanding to reduce the OBC quota. Do not spread misunderstanding.’ He urged Chief Minister Fadnavis not to insult the poor Marathas and accused him of trying to create instability in the state and spoil the atmosphere.
