An earthquake of 6.0 magnitude struck Afghanistan at midnight on Sunday, 1 September 2025, due to which more than a thousand people have lost their lives so far. At the same time, more than 3 thousand people are reported to be injured.
According to the German Research for Geosciences (GFZ), the epicenter of the earthquake was 27 km east of Jalalabad city. Its depth was only 10 km. The earthquake was so dangerous that many villages have been completely destroyed by it.
‘1,100 people killed in earthquake’
Abdul Jabbar Behir, head of the Afghan Media and Research Center, told Al Arabiya during a conversation that at least 1,100 people have died in this earthquake while more than 3,500 people have been injured.
Most deaths in Kunar province – report
At the same time, according to the NYT report, most deaths have occurred in Kunar province. Apart from Sunday, an earthquake of 4.6 magnitude also occurred on Monday, which was 65 km below the ground. According to Al Jazeera, its tremors were also felt in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab province. Not only this, these tremors were also felt in Gurugram, India.
PM Modi expressed grief over the earthquake incident
Earlier, PM Modi expressed grief over the earthquake incident. He tweeted on his X handle and wrote, ‘I am deeply saddened by the loss of life and property in the earthquake in Afghanistan. Our condolences and prayers are with the bereaved families in this difficult time, and we wish the injured a speedy recovery. India is ready to provide all possible humanitarian assistance and relief to the affected people.’
India extended a helping hand, sent tents and food
Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar tweeted that he spoke to Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister Maulvi Amir Khan Muttaki over the phone. He also expressed his condolences for the people killed in the earthquake.
S Jaishankar said that India has sent tents for help. Also, 15 tonnes of food items have been sent from Kabul to Kunar. Today India will send more relief material.
