The chemistry between PM Modi, Putin and Xi Jinping at the SCO summit in China has upset Trump. Immediately after the SCO, Trump issued a statement defending his tariff move. Trump said at the White House on Tuesday (August 2) that India has imposed the highest tariffs in the world on American goods, while the American market is open for Indian products. Giving the example of Harley Davidson, he said that up to 200% tariff was imposed on motorcycles, due to which the company was not able to sell motorcycles in India. As a result, the company had to set up a plant in India itself to avoid tariffs. He further said that the relationship between America and India is very good, but for many years this relationship was one-sided.
President Trump said that India was charging a very high tariff from us, which was the highest in the world, so America was not doing much trade with India, but they were doing trade with us because we were not charging tariffs from them. It was our foolishness that we were not charging tariffs from them. India was sending its products to America. They used to send many types of products to America, but we did not send anything to India, because they used to charge 100 percent tariff from us.
No pressure from America – India
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping participated in the SCO summit. This was the first time after the US imposed tariffs, when the leaders of the three big countries of the world were seen under one roof. After this, the way Trump has targeted India while defending the tariffs, his frustration is clearly visible. However, India has clearly told that it is not going to come under any kind of pressure from America. During this time, trade talks are also going on between the two countries, in which no solution has been found yet.
US court declared tariffs illegal
Recently, an American court declared most of the tariffs imposed by Trump as illegal. The court said that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) does not give the President the right to impose tariffs or taxes. The decision given by a majority of 7-4 has challenged an important part of Trump’s trade policy. This decision will affect the reciprocal tariffs imposed on China, Canada and Mexico. At the same time, Trump has described the court’s decision as completely devastating for the country.
US tariffs on India and bilateral discussions
The Trump administration has imposed a 25% reciprocal tariff on Indian goods and an additional 25% duty on oil imports from Russia. This has brought the total tariff to 50%. However, negotiations are on between the two countries on a bilateral trade agreement (BTA).
India has drawn a Laxman Rekha – Piyush Goyal
At the Global Investor Summit 2025 in Mumbai, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said that some geopolitical issues in trade talks with the US have slowed down the talks. He clearly said that India has drawn its Laxman Rekha. He also stressed on maintaining strategic autonomy in trade with Russia.
