New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs has rejected the recent statements of White House trade advisor Peter Navarro, calling them false and misleading. In a press conference, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal condemned the statements of Peter Navarro and said that the objectionable comments he made on New Delhi for buying Russian crude oil are false and misleading.

Peter Navarro’s statements are false and misleading

Randhir Jaiswal said, “We have seen the false and misleading statements made by Navarro and we categorically reject them.” Last week, Navarro accused India of being an “oil money laundering center for the Kremlin”. India continues to buy Russian weapons, while it urged US defense companies to transfer sensitive military technologies and set up manufacturing plants in India.

Why did the relations sour?

Relations between New Delhi and Washington have soured after Trump doubled the tariffs on Indian goods to 50 per cent, including an additional 25 per cent duty on India’s purchase of Russian crude oil.

India called the US action “unreasonable and unreasonable” and also expressed surprise as to why it was chosen for punitive action. Surprisingly, the US has not taken any punitive action against China, the largest importer of Russian crude oil. Defending the purchase of crude oil from Russia, India has been saying that its energy purchases are motivated by national interest and market dynamics.

What did Peter Navarro say?
Targeting India over the purchase of oil from Russia, Peter Navarro had said that “Brahmins” are profiteering at the expense of the Indian people and this needs to be “stopped”. Navarro said in an interview to ‘Fox News Sunday’, “Look (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi is a great leader.” He said that Modi is the leader of the world’s largest democratic country and he “does not understand how Indian leaders are cooperating with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.”

Navarro said, “So that’s all I want to say I would like, Indian people please understand what is happening here. You have Brahmins who are profiteering at the expense of Indian people. We need to stop this.” Navarro has been targeting India for the past few days following the deterioration in relations between Washington and New Delhi over US President Donald Trump’s policies on trade and tariffs.
