Bharat Ratna 2024: Bharat Ratna is known as the country’s highest honor. This year five people will be honored with Bharat Ratna. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday (February 9) announced the names of three out of the five people to be honored this year.
PM Modi said that former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh, PV Narasimha Rao and famous scientist and father of the Green Revolution in the country, Dr. MS Swaminathan will be honored with the country’s highest civilian honor Bharat Ratna (posthumously). PM Modi’s 10-year tenure is ending this year. During his decade long tenure, 10 great personalities have been honored with Bharat Ratna. Let us know their names through a list.
Which five people are being honored this year?
Last month, Prime Minister Modi announced the award of Bharat Ratna to former Chief Minister of Bihar and socialist leader Karpoori Thakur. Just a few days ago, it was announced that former Home Minister of the country and veteran BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani will be honored with Bharat Ratna. At the same time, on Friday, it was announced that Chaudhary Charan Singh, PV Narasimha Rao and Dr. Swaminathan will be honored with Bharat Ratna posthumously.

In which government, when, to whom and how many Bharat Ratnas were given?
- 10 people were awarded Bharat Ratna in PM Modi’s government. Five people are being honored in 2024, whereas in 2019, three people were given Bharat Ratna. Apart from this, two people were awarded Bharat Ratna in 2015.
During the 16-year tenure of the country’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, 13 people were awarded Bharat Ratna. In the year 1955, Jawaharlal Nehru himself was given the Bharat Ratna. Let us tell you that Bharat Ratna was started in 1954.
During the tenure of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi from 1966 to 1977, four people were given Bharat Ratna. This included Lal Bahadur Shastri, Indira Gandhi, Varahgiri Venkat Giri and K. Kamaraj was involved.
During Indira Gandhi’s second term from 1980 to 1984, two people were given the country’s highest honor. Mother Teresa was awarded Bharat Ratna in 1980 and Acharya Binova Bhave in 1983.
During the five-year tenure of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi from 1984 to 1989, two people were awarded Bharat Ratna. This included Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan in 1987 and MGR in 1988.
During the tenure of former PM VP Singh, Bhimrao Ambedar and Nelson Mandela were awarded Bharat Ratna. VP Singh’s tenure was not even for one year.
The tenure of former PM PV Narasimha Rao was from 1991 to 1996. During this tenure, six people were given Bharat Ratna. Six people including Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Rajiv Gandhi, Satyajit Ray were included in it.
During the 332-day tenure of former Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral from 1997 to 1998, three people were given the country’s highest honor. Another recipient of this honor was Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, who was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1997.
During the tenure of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee from 1998 to 2004, eight people received Bharat Ratna. Most of these people were associated with literature and art and music.
During the 10-year tenure of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh from 2004 to 2014, 3 people were given Bharat Ratna. Pandit Bhimsen Joshi was awarded Bharat Ratna in 2008. In 20214, CNR and Sachin Tendulkar were also awarded Bharat Ratna.
