Tamil Nadu: 39 people died in a stampede at Vijay’s political rally in Karur, Chief Minister MK Stalin announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the families of the deceased.

On Saturday, 39 people died in a stampede at a rally organized by Tamil Nadu’s Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay Rupani in Karur. Several leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister MK Stalin, expressed condolences. The families of those killed in the stampede will receive a compensation of ₹10 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. Prior to this incident, the Madras High Court had issued a warning regarding security concerns.

Actor-turned-politician Vijay Rupani’s rallies have been controversial since the beginning. Crowds were a major reason behind this. This led to the government imposing several restrictions on the rallies.

The Madras High Court had previously warned about security lapses at Vijay Rupani’s rallies. It also questioned who would be responsible if someone lost their life at the rally. The court ordered the Tamil Nadu government to establish uniform security regulations for political rallies of all parties.

Following the incident in Karur, questions have now arisen about whether these warnings were ignored. Meanwhile, the Union Home Ministry has requested a report from the Tamil Nadu government regarding the incident.

Why did such a stampede occur?
Vijay was addressing a rally in Karur, attended by thousands. One reason for the large turnout was the desire to catch a glimpse of Vijay. This is why a large number of youth, women, and children also attended. Although the event began around 7 p.m., people began gathering as early as 11 a.m.

Stampede due to a large crowd
According to the administration, the expected crowd for the event was 10,000 people. However, the crowd was many times larger. People experienced difficulty breathing, leading to several fainting. Vijay immediately stopped his speech, provided water to the people, and arranged for ambulances for them. However, by then a stampede had already broken out, resulting in the deaths of 39 people. Around 100 people are currently being treated in hospital.
