The Sri Lankan Navy arrested 12 Indian fishermen on the Delft Sea coast in Jaffna. The fishermen are accused of violating Sri Lankan maritime boundaries while fishing. The Sri Lankan Navy also seized the fishermen’s boat. This action could impact relations between the two countries.
The Navy issued a statement, saying, “In the early hours of 28 September 2025, the Sri Lankan Navy seized an Indian fishing boat that was poaching in Sri Lankan waters near Delft Island in Jaffna and arrested 12 Indian fishermen.” The statement said that the Indian fishermen had entered Sri Lankan waters while fishing illegally.
Detained for legal proceedings
The fishermen and the seized boat were brought to Kankesanthurai Port and handed over to the Fisheries Inspectorate in Mayilady for further legal proceedings. There has been no official statement from India yet.
Incident of Firing on Indian Fishermen
The fishermen issue remains a contentious issue in India-Sri Lanka relations, with Sri Lankan Navy personnel firing on Indian fishermen in the Palk Strait and seizing their boats in several alleged incidents of illegal entry into Sri Lankan waters.
Where are the arrested fishermen from?
According to a Times of India report, ten of the arrested fishermen are from Karaikal district, one from Nagapattinam, and one from Mayiladuthurai. The boat seized by the Navy belongs to T. Selvam, 44, of Kottucheri Medu village in Karaikal district.
These fishermen left the Karaikal fishing port early Thursday morning. On Saturday night, they were fishing with other boats south of Kodiakarai (Point Calimere). At around 2:40 a.m. on Sunday, personnel from Sri Lanka’s Northern Naval Command encountered the group.
