Now, Trump is preparing to teach Beijing a lesson regarding cooking oil. Trump has threatened China that he is considering ending cooking oil trade with Beijing.
US President Trump has issued an open threat to China. He wrote on the social media platform Truth, “I believe China is deliberately not buying soybeans from us and causing hardship to our soybean farmers, which is an act of economic hostility. To retaliate, we are considering ending cooking oil and other trade with China. For example, we can easily produce cooking oil ourselves; we don’t need to buy it from China.”
What is the reason for the China-US dispute?
In fact, China has been the largest buyer of American soybeans. According to a CNBC report, China purchased approximately 27 million tons of soybeans in 2024, valued at approximately $12.8 billion. However, China has stopped purchasing American soybeans since May 2025. Xi Jinping imposed this in response to US tariffs. However, China also imposed retaliatory taxes on American goods.

In terms of cooking oil, China reached record levels in 2024. Significantly, the US purchased approximately 43 percent of China’s total exports.
