Jharkhand: About a month ago in Garhwa district, the school principal slapped a student while wearing slippers instead of shoes; she died during treatment.

About a month ago, a school principal in Jharkhand’s Garhwa district allegedly slapped a student. The reason was that she had come to school wearing slippers instead of school shoes. After being slapped by the principal, the student had to be hospitalized. She died during treatment on Tuesday (October 14).

The incident occurred on September 15, when a student named Divya Kumari came to school wearing slippers instead of shoes. Acting Principal Draupadi Minj became enraged. Citing rules, she stated that slippers were not part of the school’s dress code. She then allegedly scolded and slapped the student for disobeying the rules.

Student initially fine, later overcome with depression
The student initially appeared fine, but later became depressed. After treatment at a hospital in Daltonganj, she was referred to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences in Ranchi, where she died during treatment.

Principal accused of mental harassment
The student’s parents filed a complaint with the Bargarh police station. The girl’s villagers blocked the main road by placing her body and shouting slogans against the school management. The protesters alleged that Divya’s death was due to mental harassment by Minj and demanded his arrest.

The blockade was lifted after police assurances.
Police and district administration officials arrived at the scene and appealed to the protesters to lift the blockade. They were assured that action would be taken against the culprits. The principal declined to comment on the matter.
