Ministry of External Affairs: 2,790 Indian nationals living illegally in the US have returned since January, 100 Indians were also deported from the UK

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday shared information regarding citizens returning to India from the United States. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that 2,790 Indian citizens have returned home since the beginning of this year. He stated that these individuals did not meet the residency criteria and were living there illegally.

During the weekly press briefing, Jaiswal said, “Since January, approximately 2,790 Indian citizens who did not meet the criteria have returned to India from the United States. These individuals were living there illegally. Their credentials and nationality were verified, and they were deported. This status is as of October 29th.”

Nationality Verified
Jaiswal clarified that the nationality of each individual was verified before their return. He said, “Before their return, we verified their credentials and nationality, and only then were they deported.” He stated that this entire process was carried out in accordance with legal and diplomatic protocols between Indian and US officials.

Citizens Deported from the UK
Indian citizens living illegally were deported not only from the US but also from the UK. Jaiswal said, “On the UK side, we have had approximately 100 Indian citizens deported this year after thoroughly verifying their nationality.” He said this shows that India and other countries are taking strict measures to prevent illegal attempts.

Reduction in Illegal Immigrants in the US
The US is consistently taking strict action against citizens from India or other countries who are living there illegally and is deporting them back to their countries. According to data released by US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), there has been a significant decline in Indian citizens caught trying to enter the US over the past four years. It is being said that this decline is the biggest year-on-year decline since 2021, as incidents of illegal entry of Indians started increasing due to economic problems after the Covid pandemic.
