The 59th Indian College of Allergy, Asthma and Applied Immunology Conference formally opened on Thursday at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow. Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak, the chief guest, inaugurated the event and strongly urged people to adopt a healthy lifestyle to prevent asthma, allergies, and lung diseases. He stated that the government is running awareness campaigns to address the growing dangers of air pollution, but individual change is essential.
Emphasis on Preventing Air Pollution
Addressing the event held at KGMU’s Centenary Phase-2 Building, Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak said, “Asthma, a type of lung allergy, is the most prevalent non-communicable disease. Approximately 300 million people worldwide suffer from it, and 450,000 deaths occur annually, most of which are preventable.” He advised avoiding dust, planting more trees, using public transport, and reducing vehicle emissions.
Deputy CM Brajesh Pathak, highlighting the health department’s initiatives, stated that awareness programs are being conducted regularly. Doctors and paramedical staff are being trained in new technologies and medicines. He urged doctors to use the best technology and quality medicines in treating patients.
KGMU’s Legacy and Government Support
Deputy CM Brajesh Pathak praised KGMU, saying, “Big names in the world of medicine have been associated with KGMU in one way or another. Since its inception, this institute has made unprecedented contributions to medical science.” He expressed hope that the brainstorming sessions at the conference would break new ground in the medical world.
Speaking about the government’s support, Brajesh Pathak assured, “All necessary steps will be taken in the interest of patients. We will do whatever is possible at the state level and will request the Union Health Minister for issues that fall under the central purview. Necessary medical equipment will also be provided to KGMU.” Addressing the doctors, he said, “You are God’s second incarnation. Your research papers will be a boon for generations to come. Your suggestions will be implemented without delay.”
Experts Honored and Asthma Statistics
Several experts were honored at the conference. Dr. Ved Prakash, Chairman of the Department of Pulmonary Medicine and Critical Care, stated that approximately 5 percent of people in India suffer from asthma. It is more prevalent in women than in men and is a leading cause of chronic illness in children.
