Police have arrested the dumper driver who crushed 14 people to death in Rajasthan’s capital, Jaipur. The first photo of the driver has surfaced, showing him hospitalized. This is the same driver who wreaked havoc on the capital’s streets today. The accused continued to crush people at high speed, killing 14 people so far, while 13 others are injured in various hospitals.
Jaipur Collector Jitendra Soni stated that the dumper was traveling at high speed from Road No. 14 toward the Loha Mandi petrol pump and repeatedly hit vehicles along the way. Collector Jitendra Soni stated that 14 people died and 13 were injured in the accident. The injured are being treated at the SMS Hospital Trauma Center, and many are in critical condition.
17 vehicles also crushed
According to police, the horrific collision occurred near Loha Mandi when an allegedly drunk dumper driver hit at least 17 vehicles before colliding with another trailer and stopping. Eyewitnesses said the accident was so horrific that the remains of the bodies of those hit by the dumper were scattered across the road. Several bikes were crushed under the dumper’s wheels, and several cars were also shattered. Eyewitnesses described the scene as nothing short of a massacre.
People described the scene of the accident
Local shopkeeper Mahesh Sharma said, “We saw people pulling bodies out of the damaged cars one after another. Some were trapped inside, some were lying on the road. There was chaos, screams, and blood everywhere.” Additional Police Commissioner Rajiv Pachar, who was present at the scene, said that the dumper driver was driving recklessly and hit a car, after which locals chased him.
According to the officer, he drove the dumper at a high speed, hitting pedestrians and motorcyclists on the road. He said the truck then collided with a trailer truck and a car on the Delhi-Ajmer highway before stopping.
The accused dumper was traveling at a speed of 100 km/h.
Regarding the driver’s intoxication, he said, “The accused driver is injured. The situation will be clear only after a medical examination. However, the nature of the accident could certainly be due to intoxication or a medical reason.” CCTV footage shows the dumper traveling at speeds exceeding 100 km/h, hitting vehicles and crushing motorcyclists. Locals apprehended the driver and handed him over to the police.
Five members of a family injured
The victims included members of a family from Agra—Nanji Bhai, his brother, two women, and a child—who were returning from worship at Khatushyamji. Nanji Bhai said, “Our car was parked on the roadside when a dumper hit it from behind. Five members of the family were injured.”
Rakesh, a relative of the deceased Mahendra (38), said that his elder brother’s two daughters, Varsha (19) and Bhanu (5), had come to Jaipur with their uncle to celebrate Diwali. After the holidays, Mahendra went to the bus stand to board the two girls when the accident occurred. He said that Varsha is admitted to the trauma center, while Mahendra and Bhanu have died.
Public anger over the accident
A team of Jaipur police is currently searching for the dumper driver. He fled after the accident. Residents of Jaipur are furious over the incident. They claim the driver was driving the dumper in such a manner, yet not a single traffic police officer was seen at the scene. People said the driver was drunk and easily escaped. Police have yet to apprehend him. Seeing the public anger, Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma has called for strict action against the accused.
Families of the deceased will receive ₹2 lakh
PM Modi also expressed grief over the accident. He tweeted, “I am saddened by the loss of life and property in the accident in Jaipur, Rajasthan. My condolences are with those who lost their loved ones. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured. An ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh will be provided to the families of each deceased from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund. ₹50,000 will be given to the injured.”
