Jharkhand DGP Anurag Gupta, a 1990-batch IPS officer, has resigned from his post. Although the government has not officially confirmed his resignation, sources at police headquarters indicated that Gupta submitted his resignation to the Chief Minister’s residence late Tuesday evening.

Discussions have begun that following Gupta’s resignation, the next DGP could be either 1992-batch IAS officer Prashant Singh or 1993-batch IPS officer MS Bhatia. Gupta, a 1990-batch IPS officer, had remained in the DGP’s position even after his retirement on April 30, 2025.

The state government approved his extension for a further two years on February 2, 2025, under new rules enacted on January 8, 2025. However, citing the All India Service Rules, the Central Government had already informed the then Chief Secretary through a letter on April 22, 2025, that DGP Anurag Gupta was retiring on April 30, 2025, and hence, he would not receive an extension.

Later, the state government also corresponded with this matter, arguing that the extension of service for IPS officer Anurag Gupta was in accordance with the rules. Jharkhand BJP President and Leader of the Opposition Babulal Marandi subsequently filed petitions in the High Court and the Supreme Court, raising objections to this issue. It should be noted that Anurag Gupta, a 1990-batch IPS officer, was first appointed as the In-Charge DGP of Jharkhand on July 26, 2024.

Meanwhile, during the Jharkhand Assembly elections, he was removed from the post of In-Charge DGP on the orders of the Election Commission. After winning the election with a landslide victory, Chief Minister Hemant Soren reappointed him as the DGP in-charge of the state on November 28, 2024, immediately after the formation of the government under the leadership of Hemant Soren.

IPS Anurag Gupta has served in several important positions in the Jharkhand Police. He served as Superintendent of Police in Garhwa, Giridih, and Hazaribagh districts, and as SSP in the capital, Ranchi. IPS Anurag Gupta also performed outstandingly in undivided Bihar. He was also awarded the President’s Gallantry Award for bravery.

IPS Anurag Gupta was suspended for approximately 26 months. He was accused of threatening and pressuring the then MLA of Barkagaon in favor of a particular party during the 2016 Rajya Sabha elections. IPS Anurag Gupta was suspended on February 14, 2020. Hemant Soren’s government revoked his suspension in April 2022.

There had been a long-standing disagreement between the central and state governments regarding his continuation in office after retirement. It is noteworthy that Anurag Gupta was due to retire on April 30, 2025, but the Jharkhand government granted him a two-year extension. The central government objected to this decision and wrote a letter to the then Chief Secretary on April 22, 2025, clarifying that an extension cannot be granted to a retired officer. This led to a series of correspondence and legal disputes between the state and central government.

BJP President and Leader of the Opposition Babulal Marandi also objected to this matter and filed petitions in the High Court and the Supreme Court.

According to sources, following Anurag Gupta’s resignation, the search for a new DGP of Jharkhand has now begun. Two names are being considered the most prominent—1992-batch IPS officer Prashant Singh and 1993-batch IPS officer M.S. Bhatia.

Anurag Gupta was first appointed acting DGP on July 26, 2024, but was removed on the instructions of the Election Commission during the assembly elections. Later, after Hemant Soren returned to power on November 28, 2024, he was again appointed acting DGP and was appointed regular DGP on February 3, 2025.

In his career spanning over three decades, Anurag Gupta has held several important positions in the Jharkhand Police. He has served as the SP of Garhwa, Giridih, Hazaribagh, and the SSP of Ranchi. He also performed outstanding work in united Bihar, for which he was awarded the President’s Gallantry Award.

However, his career has not been without controversies. He was suspended in February 2020 on charges of working in favor of a political party during the 2016 Rajya Sabha elections. After nearly 26 months of suspension, in April 2022, the Hemant Soren government revoked the suspension and reinstated him as DGP and later appointed him as regular DGP.

Most interestingly, the Hemant Soren government, which first appointed Anurag Gupta, a 1990-batch IPS officer, as the acting DGP of the state, then appointed him as the regular DGP, and later granted him an extension. This same government suspended Anurag Gupta on February 14, 2020. He remained suspended for nearly two years. He was accused of threatening and pressuring the then-Barkagaon MLA while working in favor of a BJP candidate during the 2016 Rajya Sabha elections. Gupta later approached the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT). CAT ordered the revocation of his suspension. His suspension was revoked in April 2022.

Later, the same Hemant Singh Sidhu government appointed Anurag Gupta as the acting DGP on July 26, 2024. However, during the Jharkhand Assembly elections, he was removed from the position on the orders of the Election Commission. However, after winning with a landslide victory, Chief Minister Hemant Soren reappointed Anurag Gupta as the acting DGP of the state on November 28, 2024.

What did BJP MLA CP Singh say?

On February 3, 2025, the acting DGP issued a notification appointing him as the regular Director General of Police (DGP) of Jharkhand. Regarding Anurag Gupta’s resignation, senior BJP leader and former minister CP Singh, a seven-time MLA from Ranchi, said, “Better late than never. He resigned after such embarrassment. This is surprising.”
