Officials from the Customs Department, Mumbai Customs Zone-III, conducted operations at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) between Thursday (November 6) and Sunday (November 9) and busted five cases of drug trafficking and gold smuggling.
A total of 13.84 kilograms of hydroponic weed (ganja) and 358 grams of gold were seized. The total international market value of the seized drugs is estimated to be approximately ₹13.84 crore.
A look at all five cases
On Thursday (November 6), acting on a specific tip, Customs officials apprehended a passenger on flight 6E 1060 (Bangkok to Mumbai). Upon inspection, 2.873 kilograms of hydroponic weed (ganja) was recovered from the passenger’s check-in trolley bag. The value of the seized goods is estimated to be approximately ₹2.87 crore. Customs arrested the accused under the NDPS Act, 1985.
This much cargo was found on a flight from Phuket to Mumbai.
The second incident occurred on Friday (November 7th) when flight number SG 82 was traveling from Phuket to Mumbai. Two passengers were intercepted based on APIS profiling. During the investigation, 4.022 kilograms of hydroponic weed (ganja) was recovered from their luggage, with a market value of approximately ₹4.02 crore. Both passengers were arrested and a case was registered under the NDPS Act.

The third incident occurred on Saturday (November 8th). Acting on specific information, Customs apprehended two passengers on flight number TG 351 from Bangkok to Mumbai. During the investigation, 3.999 kilograms of hydroponic weed (ganja) was recovered from their trolley bag, valued at approximately ₹3.99 crore. A case was also filed against them.

The fourth incident at Mumbai Airport occurred on a flight from Nairobi to Mumbai. Meanwhile, 22-carat molten gold bars were recovered from a passenger on flight KQ 204 based on spot profiling. The total weight of the recovered gold is 358 grams and the value is ₹37,74,215.
In addition, the fifth and final case was registered on Saturday. 2.946 kilograms of hydroponic weed (ganja) was recovered from the trolley bag of a passenger caught on flight SL 218 (Bangkok to Mumbai) based on spot profiling. The value of the seized drugs is approximately ₹2.94 crore. The accused was arrested under the NDPS Act, 1985.
In these five cases, 13.84 kilograms of narcotics (hydroponic weed) and 358 grams of gold were recovered. The total value is estimated to be over ₹13.84 crore. Mumbai Customs Zone-III said that strict surveillance is being maintained on passengers arriving on international flights to foil every attempt at smuggling.
