Cervical cancer is one of the most common cancers in women. Yet, even today, women remain largely unaware of this disease. Therefore, World Cervical Cancer Elimination Day of Action is celebrated on November 17th. This day is dedicated to eliminating cervical cancer and raising awareness about it. Led by the World Health Organization (WHO), this initiative is a global effort, and organizations and health professionals worldwide work together to celebrate this day.
If cervical cancer is detected early, it can be completely cured. Therefore, it is crucial to understand its early symptoms and the age at which women are at increased risk. Dr. Amit Upadhyay, Senior Consultant Hematologist and Oncologist at PSRI Hospital, explains the symptoms of cervical cancer and at what age groups are women at increased risk.
Early Symptoms of Cervical Cancer
The early symptoms of cervical cancer are often very mild, so many women may not even notice it at first. Early signs include irregular vaginal bleeding, such as bleeding between periods, spotting after intercourse, or bleeding even after menopause. Changes in vaginal discharge, such as increased odor, color, or quantity, can also be a significant indicator. Some women may experience pelvic pain, back pain, or leg pain, especially if the cancer begins to spread to surrounding tissues.
At what age does cervical cancer occur?
As for age, the highest risk of cervical cancer is seen in women between 30 and 50 years of age. Although HPV infection can occur at an earlier age, the cancer progression process is gradual, and the risk typically increases after age 30. Women who do not get regular Pap smears or HPV tests are at even greater risk.
The good news is that cervical cancer is largely preventable through screening and the HPV vaccine. Therefore, regular checkups and timely vaccinations are extremely important for every woman after the age of 21.
