Russian President Vladimir Putin is visiting India next month, but even before that, news has come from Moscow that could significantly enhance the future strength of the Indian Air Force. Russia has made an “open offer” to India for its most modern and lethal weapon, the Su-57 fifth-generation stealth fighter jet. Significantly, Russia has not only accepted India’s technical demands but also stated its full readiness to transfer the aircraft’s technology without any restrictions.
Technology will be provided without any conditions
During the Dubai Air Show 2025, Sergey Chemezov, CEO of the Russian state-owned defense company Rostec, made a major statement, citing the long-standing relationship between India and Russia. He made it clear that Russia is committed to meeting India’s security needs. Chemezov stated that Russia continued to supply weapons even when sanctions were imposed on India, and that stance remains the same today.
Regarding India’s demand for the Su-57 or S-400 systems, he clarified that Russia will provide whatever India desires. Vadim Badekha, Director General of UAC, a Rostec subsidiary, also confirmed that Russia has accepted all technical concerns or conditions raised by India regarding the Su-57. This move sets a new example of trust between the two countries.
Everything from engines to radars will be provided.
This news is significant for the average Indian because it is not just a deal to purchase an aircraft, but rather a plan to manufacture it in India. Russia’s state-owned arms exporter, Rosoboronexport, has proposed that the Su-57 could also be produced in India.
Under this proposal, Russia will provide India with technology that was previously considered highly classified through “technology transfer.” This includes the fighter jet’s engine, AESA radar, optics, AI elements, and low-signature technology to evade enemy radar.
Moreover, Russia has also agreed to jointly develop a two-seater version of this aircraft for India. This means that in the future, India will no longer have to fear sanctions from other countries for spare parts or supply chains, as critical components will be manufactured in India.
