Karnataka: A Congress worker and Gram Panchayat member, Ganesh Gowda, was murdered with a sharp weapon during a clash between two groups in Chikmagalur. Four accused have been arrested so far, and the search for the others is underway.

Chikkamagaluru: A Congress worker was allegedly murdered in a clash between two groups in Chikkamagaluru district of Karnataka. Police said on Saturday that the deceased has been identified as 38-year-old Ganesh Gowda. Ganesh was a member of the Gram Panchayat and a local leader of the Congress party. He was also a potential candidate in the upcoming Zilla Panchayat elections. The tragic incident occurred around 10:30 pm on Friday night in the Sakharayapattana area of ​​Kadur taluk in the district.

‘Members of both groups attacked each other’
According to the police, the clash started over a banner near a monastery. Members of both groups attacked each other, resulting in several people sustaining serious head injuries. The injured were admitted to Chikkamagaluru District Hospital. During this altercation, Ganesh Gowda was attacked with a sharp weapon, which led to his death. Police said that a clash had also occurred between the same groups half an hour earlier near a bar in Sakharayapattana, and this attack took place near the Kalmarudeshwara Math.

‘We are investigating the motive behind the incident’
A senior police officer said that the incident appears to have stemmed from an old rivalry, but the investigation will clarify whether it was politically motivated or not. Superintendent of Police Vikram Amathe said, “Ganesh Gowda was murdered on Friday night. We visited the spot and the crime scene officer’s team collected evidence. We are investigating the motive behind the incident. Four teams have been formed to apprehend the accused. Two people involved in the clash are hospitalized, and jail guards have been deployed there. Action will be taken based on the complaint and the investigation.”

Four people, including Sanjay, Nitin, and Nagabhushan, arrested
The police have registered a case at the Sakharayapattana police station. Four people, including Sanjay, Nitin, and Nagabhushan, have been arrested in connection with the murder, while the search for the remaining three is underway. The exact sequence of events and the reason for the incident will be known after the arrest of the accused. The deceased’s body has been handed over to the family. A heavy police presence has been deployed in the area to maintain peace, and officials are closely monitoring the situation. In Bengaluru, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah reacted to the incident, saying, “We will take action according to the law. I will speak to the SP immediately.”
