There’s a major update regarding the date of the municipal election results in Maharashtra. The Supreme Court has cleared the way for the declaration of results for all municipal elections in the state on December 21, after the second phase of voting on December 20. The Supreme Court has upheld the decision of the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court. The Bombay High Court had directed the Maharashtra State Election Commission to declare the results of all municipal elections after the completion of the next round of voting on December 20.
Why did the High Court impose a stay?
The counting of votes for this election was scheduled for December 3. However, several candidates filed petitions in the High Court to stop the counting. After hearing the petitions, the Nagpur bench of the High Court ordered that the counting of votes for the elections held on December 2 should also be conducted along with the counting of votes for the elections to be held on December 20, and the results declared on December 21.
The reason for this decision was that if the results were declared on December 3, the voters in the 24 local bodies where voting would take place on December 20 could be influenced. The court also imposed a ban on exit polls until December 20.
First phase of voting held on December 2
The first phase of local body elections in Maharashtra was held on December 2. These elections were held for 264 municipal councils and nagar panchayats. The main contest in this election is between the Mahayuti and the Maha Vikas Aghadi. Elections were postponed in 24 local bodies, where voting will now take place on December 20. The results of all these elections will be declared on December 21.
