Religious polarization is intensifying in West Bengal ahead of the 2026 elections, with a “Gita vs. Quran” battle erupting.

In West Bengal, a suspended TMC MLA has made a new move in response to a recitation of the Bhagavad Gita. This has led to the belief that, in addition to the “Ma Mati Manush” (Mother, Land, People) slogan, Hindu-Muslim issues will be a major factor in the 2026 elections in West Bengal. Clear trends in this direction are already emerging. On December 6th, Humayun Kabir laid the foundation stone for a Babri Masjid in Murshidabad, and the very next day, on December 7th, he received a response through a grand recitation of the Bhagavad Gita.

This Gita recitation took place in Kolkata, with claims of approximately 500,000 people in attendance. Prominent figures such as Baba Bageshwar (Pandit Dhirendra Shastri) and Devaki Nandan Thakur were present. Now, the suspended TMC MLA, Humayun Kabir, has prepared a response to this Gita recitation, and the matter is turning into a Gita vs. Quran debate. Humayun Kabir claims that in February, 100,000 people will recite the Quran in Bengal, and only after that will the construction of the Babri Masjid begin.

The Political Angle Behind the Babri Masjid Initiative
A political angle is also being attributed to Humayun Kabir’s focus on the Babri Masjid, as he has already announced the formation of his own party and claims to be in contact with Owaisi. The question is whether Humayun is harboring political ambitions for the 2026 elections based on the Babri Masjid issue.

Humayun Kabir stated that his laying of the foundation stone for the Babri Masjid has no connection to politics. Politics is separate, and the foundation of the Babri Masjid is separate. He said that for the same purpose that the Sanatan Sanskriti Sansad is reciting the holy Gita, they will organize a recitation of the Quran. They will gather 100,000 people and provide them with food.

Assembly Elections Next Year
Although Humayun has not yet announced a date for this event, his announcement has heated up the political atmosphere in Bengal. State assembly elections are scheduled for next year, but even before that, politics is taking on a Hindu-Muslim dimension. The TMC alleges that Humayun is playing a political game on behalf of the BJP. 11 boxes of donations for the mosque

Humayun Kabir has made another big claim that 11 boxes of donations have been received for the mosque. 30 people were employed to count the notes. Note counting machines had to be brought in. So far, Rs. 22 lakh have been counted. Rs. 93 lakh were received online alone. Information on the total amount of donations received will be shared after the counting is complete.
