On the sixth day of the Parliament’s winter session, during a discussion in the Lok Sabha on the 150th anniversary of ‘Vande Mataram,’ MP Engineer Rashid made a humorous remark that brought laughter to the House. The discussion on ‘Vande Mataram’ in the Lok Sabha was initiated by Prime Minister Modi at 12 PM.

The discussion, which lasted for approximately 10 hours, saw both the ruling and opposition parties present their arguments. There were heated exchanges between the two sides during the debate, but there was also a moment when the MPs present burst into laughter.

“I have to go back to jail from here.”
In fact, before beginning his address, Engineer Rashid, the MP from Baramulla in Jammu and Kashmir, said something that lightened the mood in Parliament. Even the presiding officer, Dilip Saikia, laughed at his remark. When it was finally MP Rashid’s turn to speak after a long wait, he said in a lighthearted manner, “You all have been sitting here for so long, please give me a little more time.” He added, “You all have to go home, but I have to go back to jail from here.”

Why is Engineer Rashid in jail?
Baramulla MP Engineer Rashid is currently incarcerated in Tihar Jail. A Delhi court granted him permission to attend the winter session of Parliament while in custody. His lawyer had filed a petition in court stating that as a Member of Parliament, it was Engineer Rashid’s public duty to participate in the parliamentary session.

Defeated Chief Minister Omar Abdullah
Engineer Rashid defeated the then Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Baramulla. He has been in Tihar Jail since 2019. He was arrested by the NIA under the UAPA in connection with an alleged terror funding case from 2017.
