Haryana: Amidst the controversy surrounding the suicide of IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar, the government has relieved IPS officer Shatrujeet Kapoor from the post of Director General of Police (DGP) and handed over the command to O.P. Singh.

The Haryana government has taken a major administrative step amidst the ongoing controversy surrounding the alleged suicide of IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar. On Sunday (December 14), the government relieved IPS officer Shatrujeet Kapoor from the post of Director General of Police (DGP). Earlier, Kapoor had been sent on two months’ leave in connection with the same case. This decision by the government is being seen as a significant change in the police department.

OP Singh Takes Charge
In Shatrujeet Kapoor’s absence, senior IPS officer OP Singh, who was already holding additional charge, has been appointed as the acting DGP until further orders.

The order issued by the government states that OP Singh will currently be responsible for leading the Haryana Police force. He will face the major challenge of maintaining law and order in the state.

The Haryana government may soon begin the process of appointing a new permanent DGP. A list of senior IPS officers is likely to be sent to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for this purpose.

The final decision on the new DGP’s name will be made only after approval from the UPSC. Significantly, 1992-batch IPS officer OP Singh is scheduled to retire on December 31, so his tenure is considered temporary.

Kapoor Retains Other Responsibility
According to the government order, 1990-batch IPS officer Shatrujeet Kapoor will continue to serve as the Chairman of the Haryana Police Housing Corporation, Panchkula, despite being removed from the DGP post. Kapoor is an engineering graduate and was appointed as the Director General of Police of Haryana in August 2023.

Suicide Case Fuels Political Turmoil
The alleged suicide of IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar continues to be in the headlines. The opposition has been questioning the government on this matter and demanding an impartial investigation. The decision to remove the DGP in this atmosphere also reflects the increasing pressure on the government.
