Lucknow: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is worried about the slow pace of the Special Summary Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll in Uttar Pradesh. The names of approximately 40 million voters could be removed from the voter list in Uttar Pradesh. So far, only about 120 million voter forms have been returned in UP. CM Yogi says that in Uttar Pradesh, with a population of 250 million, there should be at least 160 million voters. Since only 120 million people have filled out the SIR forms, it means that 40 million voters are unaccounted for. At a felicitation ceremony for the new UP BJP president, Pankaj Chaudhary, CM Yogi said that party workers should work hard to locate these missing 40 million voters.
CM Yogi orders verification
CM Yogi today instructed BJP leaders to go door-to-door, verify voters, and find those whose names might be removed from the voter list, because 85 to 90 percent of these 40 million unaccounted voters are BJP supporters. The disappearance of 40 million voters is indeed a matter of concern. This number is very large. UP Transport Minister Dayashankar Singh said that most people living in cities also have voter cards registered in their villages. Since one can only be registered as a voter in one place, many migrant workers living in cities have kept their voter registration in their villages. The names of those who did this have appeared in the list of missing voters.
Ghaziabad is among the districts in UP where the SIR work is progressing at the slowest pace. However, BJP MP from Ghaziabad, Atul Garg, is giving it a new spin. Atul Garg says that the opposition accuses the BJP of voter fraud, but here, the votes of BJP supporters themselves are disappearing. This means that the SIR work is being done with complete impartiality.
Akhilesh Yadav takes a dig
Akhilesh Yadav took a dig at the BJP and Yogi over this tension. Akhilesh Yadav said that the fact that 85 to 90 percent of BJP voters are missing also means that due to the vigilance of the PDA (Progressive Democratic Alliance) members, the BJP was unable to manipulate the SIR process to their liking. Akhilesh alleged that the Election Commission extended the deadline for the Special Summary Revision (SSR) by two weeks only to help the BJP, but the guardians of the PDA (Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak – Backward Classes, Dalits, and Minorities) are vigilant and will not allow any foul play.
Migration could be the reason
The BJP and Akhilesh will continue to trade barbs over the missing voters, but India TV correspondent Ruchi Kumar spoke to Uttar Pradesh’s Chief Electoral Officer, Navdeep Rinwa, regarding the large number of missing voters. He also acknowledged that there has been large-scale migration in the state, meaning people have moved from one place to another, and therefore, emphasis is now being placed on getting Form-6 filled out in the remaining time. If four crore people’s votes are removed from the voter list in UP, it is indeed surprising. If this figure is accurate, it proves why the revision of the voter list was necessary.
