The Indian Army’s strength was further enhanced on Tuesday. The United States delivered three AH-64E Apache attack helicopters to the Indian Army. This is the second batch of helicopters delivered by the US, and with this, the army has now received all six helicopters. India had signed a deal with the US for six Apache helicopters. The second batch of Apache helicopters landed at Hindon Airbase in Ghaziabad on Tuesday. These helicopters will be inducted into the 451 Army Aviation Squadron located in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. Why is the Apache called a Flying Tank?
The AH-64E Apache helicopter, manufactured by the US, is considered one of the best multirole attack helicopters in the world. Due to its heavy firepower and ability to withstand combat, the Apache helicopter is also known as a ‘flying tank’. This helicopter is considered the backbone of the US Army and has been used by the US in operations in several countries.

The Apache helicopter is equipped with Hellfire missiles, 70 mm rockets, and a 30 mm chain gun. This helicopter is capable of targeting enemy positions, bunkers, and air defense systems. The Apache helicopter is equipped with top-class sensors. This helicopter also has night-fighting capabilities and is very effective in dangerous and mountainous areas.

What will be the benefit to the Army?
In 2020, the Indian government signed a deal worth ₹4,168 crore with the American aerospace company Boeing for the purchase of six Apache helicopters for the Indian Army. The acquisition of these helicopters is considered a major step towards strengthening India’s defense capabilities. These helicopters will enhance the operational capabilities of the armed forces in challenging terrains. The purchase of Apache helicopters is a significant move under the modernization of the armed forces. It’s worth noting that the Indian Air Force had previously inducted 22 Apache helicopters into its fleet.
