Afghanistan Earthquake: A 4.1 magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan, India’s neighboring country, once again. According to a statement from the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake occurred on Friday. The quake struck at a shallow depth of 10 km, increasing the likelihood of aftershocks.

Shallow Earthquakes Are Dangerous
Shallow earthquakes are generally more dangerous than deeper ones. This is because the seismic waves released by shallow earthquakes have less distance to travel to the surface, resulting in stronger ground shaking and potentially causing more damage to buildings and a higher number of casualties. Earlier, on December 15, another earthquake of magnitude 4.0 struck the same region at a depth of 22 km.

Powerful Earthquake Hit Afghanistan
Afghanistan is frequently hit by earthquakes, particularly in the Hindu Kush region, which lies in a highly active seismic zone. The recent tremors follow a powerful 6.3 magnitude earthquake that struck northern Afghanistan on November 4. According to Afghan authorities, that earthquake killed at least 27 people and injured hundreds. The tremor also damaged one of the country’s most revered mosques. The United States Geological Survey reported that the earthquake occurred at a shallow depth, amplifying its impact.

Afghanistan is Vulnerable to Earthquakes
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) states that Afghanistan remains highly vulnerable to natural disasters, including earthquakes, landslides, and seasonal flooding. The frequent tremors exacerbate the situation for communities already struggling with decades of conflict and limited development.
