BJP leader Kirit Somaiya: The Muslim population in Mumbai is growing at twice the rate of the Hindu population, and he shared data from various organizations showing the birth rates.

Mumbai: BJP leader Kirit Somaiya has raised the issue of the increasing Muslim birth rate in Mumbai. Citing the recent National Family Health Survey (NFHS) population report, he claimed that the Muslim population in Maharashtra is growing at twice the rate of the Hindu population. This statement has sparked intense political and social debate. Presenting the figures, Kirit Somaiya said that “My Mumbai is becoming Muslim Mumbai.” He further stated that the Muslim birth rate in Mumbai is double that of the Hindu birth rate.

Claim based on reports
BJP leader Kirit Somaiya has made a significant claim regarding Mumbai’s birth rate. Citing various population studies and reports, he claimed that the average fertility rate in urban areas of Maharashtra is approximately 1.4. In Mumbai, the fertility rate for Hindu families is reported to be less than 1.3. This means that 10 Hindu couples (20 people) give birth to an average of approximately 13 children. Meanwhile, the fertility rate for Muslim families in Mumbai is reported to be approximately 2.6. According to the claim, 10 Muslim couples (20 people) are giving birth to 26 or more children.

Role of Bangladeshi infiltrators
Based on these figures, it is being argued that the fertility rate of the Muslim community in Mumbai is almost double that of the Hindu community. Kirit Somaiya also claimed that the demographic shift in Mumbai is not solely due to natural population growth, but that Bangladeshi infiltrators are also playing a role. He wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “Muslim Mumbai, Bangladeshi Mumbai. The fertility rate of Muslims in Mumbai is double that of Hindus.”
