The uncertainty surrounding the top post in Karnataka’s ruling Congress party shows no signs of ending. Recently, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar met and claimed that everything was normal within the government. However, despite this, discussions about the Chief Minister’s post continued in political circles. Now, Congress MLA Iqbal Hussain has once again claimed that Shivakumar will become the state’s Chief Minister in early January next year.
Iqbal Hussain, the MLA from Ramanagara and considered a supporter of Shivakumar, had earlier this month given January 6th or 9th as the date for the change in Chief Minister. He has now reiterated that claim.
Speculation about a change in Chief Minister is rife
Amidst speculation about a change in Chief Minister in the state, the power struggle within the ruling Congress party has intensified. The state’s Congress government completed half of its five-year term on November 20th last month. However, even before this, discussions about a change in Chief Minister had gained momentum. These speculations were fueled by the alleged “power-sharing” agreement between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar in 2023.
Iqbal Hussain, in his claim on Monday, said, “There are some people who can accurately predict rains and tragedies. After hearing from such people, I have given the dates of January 6th or 9th. Let’s see, although I have faith in God.”
If there was no agreement, why would he say so?: Hussain
Speaking to reporters in Ramanagara, MLA Hussain claimed, “100 percent, Shivakumar will assume power on January 6th or 9th.” When asked if the party high command had given its approval, he said, “It is completely clear… Didn’t our leader (Shivakumar) say that an agreement had been reached? An agreement has been reached, that’s why our leader is saying this; if there was no such thing, he wouldn’t say so.”
Amidst the leadership tussle for the top post in the state, Siddaramaiah had asserted in the Assembly on December 19 that he would remain in office. He also stated that the Congress high command was “on his side” and that no decision had been made regarding his continuing in the post for the next two and a half years.
In response, Shivakumar had said that he and Siddaramaiah had reached an agreement with the involvement of the Congress high command, and that both would abide by it.
