Today is the fourth day of the Delhi march of Punjab farmers. There was a ruckus again today at Shambhu border. When the farmers tried to move towards the barricading, the Haryana Police fired tear gas shells at them. Many farmers have been injured due to this. Gramin Bharat Bandh has been called by the United Kisan Morcha and the Labor Union. During this bandh, shops have been closed in the villages and farmers have been asked not to work in the fields.
Meanwhile, buses remained off the roads during the ‘Bharat Bandh’ called by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha to pressurize the government to accept the demands of farmers including legal guarantee of MSP. Although there was partial response to the bandh call in Haryana, markets and business establishments remained closed at many places in Punjab.
Markets are closed in Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. After the call of Bharat Bandh, many other organizations have also supported it. Employees of Punjab Roadways, PRTC and Punbus are also supporting this bandh.
Announcement of toll free across the state from tomorrow
In the neighboring state of Haryana, many toll plazas of Haryana were made free from 12 noon to 3 pm by the workers of Bharatiya Kisan Union (Charuni). Let us tell you that BKU Ekta Ugrahan has announced to make toll free across the state from tomorrow.
Farmers owing allegiance to different factions demonstrated at several places and also blocked national highways in Pathankot, Tarn Taran, Bathinda and Jalandhar. They also laid siege to several toll plazas and raised slogans against the Center for not accepting their demands.
In Haryana’s Hisar, Haryana Roadways bus services remained halted as its employees also supported SKM’s Bharat Bandh call. Roadways employees demonstrated at the bus stand premises and raised slogans in support of their demands. There was no reaction to the bandh call in Kurukshetra. Shops and markets remained open and buses continued to run.
The impact of the bandh on these states
Meanwhile, members of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Charuni) staged a protest at several toll plazas in Haryana. Protests also took place in some parts of western Uttar Pradesh. Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait participated in the protest organized at Bagowali crossing on Delhi-Dehradun National Highway in Muzaffarnagar.
Tikait told reporters, “We are protesting demanding implementation of the Swaminathan Commission report, loan waiver etc.” Asked if he had any plans to visit Delhi, Tikait said, “A meeting is scheduled in Sisauli (Muzaffarnagar) on Saturday, where the future strategy will be planned.”
Several farmer organizations including Bharati Kisan Union (Rajewal), Bharatiya Kisan Union (Dakunda), Bharatiya Kisan Union (Lakhowal), Bharatiya Kisan Union (Kadian) and Kirti Kisan Union participated in the bandh. Among various demands, SKM is demanding legal guarantee of minimum support price for all crops based on the Swaminathan Commission formula and loan waiver.
