Following last year’s terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir, the Indian government took strong action against Pakistan. The government suspended the Indus Water Treaty. Meanwhile, the government informed the Assembly on Tuesday (February 17) that the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty has benefited the people of the Union Territory.
Responding to a question in the Assembly, Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Chaudhary stated that the Shahpur Kandi Project is an old project that had been pending for a long time. He stated that the project will now be completed soon and our farmers will benefit from it. He added that the treaty that was in place previously and has now been suspended has benefited us.
Water will be diverted from Chenab
Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Chaudhary stated that Ravi water will be provided to the farmers of Kathua and the Kandi belt. He also stated that water will be diverted from Chenab to ensure adequate supply to Jammu, which is facing a water crisis, and to ensure that there is no water shortage in Jammu.
“Farmers and the general public will receive water.”
The Deputy Chief Minister further stated that the water from the Ravi and Chenab rivers, which previously flowed to Pakistan, will now be diverted and used for the benefit of the farmers and citizens of Jammu and Kashmir. He stated that preparations are underway, and the people of the valley will soon benefit from it. They will no longer have to face water shortages.
The government has already made preparations to impound excess water from the Ravi and Chenab rivers. According to Jammu and Kashmir Water Resources Minister Javed Ahmed Rana, the Shahpur Kandi Dam, located on the Punjab-Jammu and Kashmir border, is nearing completion. Once completed, the excess water from the Ravi River will be prevented from flowing into Pakistan. The project is expected to be successfully completed by March 31st.
