Karnataka: Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Chandru Lamani arrested red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 5 lakh

In Karnataka, Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Chandru Lamani has been arrested red-handed while accepting a bribe of ₹5 lakh (approximately $1.5 million USD). The Karnataka Lokayukta arrested the MLA. His personal assistant and PS (Private Officer) were also detained along with the BJP MLA. Both are being questioned.

According to reports, the Lokayukta had formally formed a team to apprehend the BJP MLA. A trap was laid and the MLA was apprehended. The MLA was subsequently questioned. After the allegations were proven, he was formally arrested. The MLA’s two personal assistants have also been detained in connection with the case. It is reported that further action will be taken after questioning both his PA and PS.

According to Lokayukta officials, MLA Chandru Lamani demanded a bribe to secure the approval of a file related to a minor irrigation department project in Gadag district. The work involved constructing a retaining wall on both sides of a road. A complaint filed with the Lokayukta stated that Vijay Pujar, a Class-1 contractor from Gadag, was allegedly demanded a bribe of ₹11 lakh for project approval, after which he contacted anti-corruption officials.

Following the complaint, Lokayukta police laid a trap on Saturday. After the BJP MLA confirmed the complaint, the Lokayukta police laid a trap on Saturday. Lamani was allegedly caught accepting ₹5 lakh, part of the demanded amount.

This action was carried out by a team of Lokayukta police under the supervision of senior officers. Following this, the police also detained the MLA’s PA and PS for questioning. A Lokayukta official said that the amount of bribes the MLA has received so far is being ascertained.
