New Delhi: The Supreme Court today delivered a significant decision regarding the SIR process in West Bengal. The court mandated that judicial officers from Odisha and Jharkhand be included in the SIR process in Bengal. The Supreme Court stated that these officers must have at least three years of experience. Just a few days ago, the court had ordered the deployment of judicial officers from West Bengal in the SIR process. However, the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court stated that 250 officers have been deployed, but approximately 5 million forms remain pending. Even if each judge were to review 250 forms daily, it would still take approximately 80 days to complete the entire process.
Trinamool Congress pleased with the decision
Following this, the Supreme Court ordered the inclusion of judicial officers from Odisha and Jharkhand. The court stated that Aadhaar cards, high school admit cards, and certificates would now be valid documents. Those submitted online or physically before February 14th must be accepted. The Trinamool Congress is pleased with the court’s decision. Kunal Ghosh said that Mamata Banerjee had already stated that work would not be done so quickly, but due to the Election Commission’s stubbornness, many BLOs lost their lives and work was not done.
February 28th Deadline for Final Roll
The BJP is also viewing this decision in its own light. Bengal BJP President Shamik Bhattacharya said that bringing in judicial officers from other states means the court lacks confidence in the Bengal government. The Supreme Court has set a February 28th deadline for the publication of the final roll, but supplementary lists will be allowed to be published even after February 28th. The final electoral list will be published by combining both lists. It is hoped that the ongoing politics over SIR in Bengal will now come to an end and the path to holding elections will be cleared.
