Electoral Bonds: The Election Commission has uploaded the data received from SBI regarding election bonds on its website on Thursday (14 March), a day before the deadline. The Election Commission had received instructions from the Supreme Court to publish the details before 5 pm on March 15. At the same time, following the instructions of the Supreme Court, SBI had provided data related to electoral bonds to the Election Commission on March 12.
Earlier, on Monday (March 11), the Supreme Court had rejected the application of State Bank of India in which it had sought time till June 30 to make public the details of the encashed electoral bonds. The Constitution Bench headed by CJI DY Chandrachud had rejected the bank’s application.
What did the Supreme Court say to SBI and Election Commission?
According to news agency IANS, the bench had ordered SBI to disclose the information by the end of working hours on Tuesday, March 12. The five-judge bench (which, apart from the CJI, included Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Justice BR Gavai, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra) had said, “We direct the Election Commission of India to obtain information from the SBI on 15 Will publish details on its official website before 5 pm on March 1.
The Supreme Court had declared the electoral bond scheme unconstitutional
Let us tell you that on February 15, the Supreme Court had declared the electoral bond scheme unconstitutional and ordered SBI to disclose the matter. In an application filed in the Supreme Court on March 4, SBI said that decoding the electoral bonds and matching the donor with the donation will take time. This work will not be completed within the time limit of three weeks.
In a judgment given on February 15, the Supreme Court had declared the Electoral Bond Scheme, 2018 as unconstitutional and ordered SBI to immediately stop issuing them.
