Maldives President Mohammad Muizzu should give up his stubbornness and talk to neighboring country India to deal with economic challenges. This was not said by any Indian leader, but by former Maldives President Ibrahim Mohammad Solih himself.
Solih’s remarks came at a time when Maldives President Muizzu is being seen as a pro-China leader across the world. Ibrahim Solih has also appealed to India to give some relief to Maldives to repay its debt.
Solih further said, ‘I have seen media reports. Which shows that Muizzu wants to talk to India for restructuring the debt.’ Let us tell you that in the presidential election held in September 2023, 45-year-old Muizzu defeated 62-year-old Solih.
India is not responsible for economic challenges
While talking to the Maldives media, Solih said that India’s debt has no role in the economic challenges faced by Maldives. Maldives has a debt of 18 billion Maldivian Rufiyaa to China, while India has a debt of only 8 billion Maldivian Rufiyaa. In the case of India, Maldives has to pay within 25 years. However, I think our neighbors will help us. But for this we will have to give up our stubbornness and negotiate. There are many parties who can help us. But Muizzu does not want to compromise.
26 Indian soldiers have left Maldives
The former president said, ‘The government is deceiving the public and restarting the projects started during the MDP government. He said that the minister is now lying to hide that lie. He has demanded the complete withdrawal of 88 Indian military personnel deployed on three aviation platforms used for humanitarian and medical evacuation in Maldives by May 10. The first batch of 26 Indian military personnel has already left the island nation and has been replaced by civilians. In his first media interview, Muizzu claimed that he has not taken any such step or made any such statement that would strain the relationship between the two countries.
