Local police officer Gunardi Mundu said torrential rains lashed the Tana Toraja district of South Sulawesi province on Saturday night. After this rain, landslides occurred from the surrounding hills. Mundu said dozens of soldiers, policemen and volunteers have been deployed in search operations to rescue people in remote mountain villages. Early on Sunday, rescue workers managed to pull out alive two injured people, including an eight-year-old girl.

Police officer Gunardi Mundu said that all the injured have been admitted to a nearby hospital. National Disaster Management Agency spokesman Abdul Muhari said that by Sunday afternoon, rescue workers had recovered at least 11 bodies in Makale village and three in South Makale and the search for three others, including a three-year-old girl, was still ongoing.
