Delhi Mayor Elections 2024: The Election Commission of India has made a big comment regarding the election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor in the capital Delhi on Friday (26 April). Late in the evening on Wednesday (April 24), the Election Commission issued a No Objection Certificate regarding the election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor in Delhi Municipal Corporation. The Commission wrote a letter informing that the Commission has no objection to the proposed date of voting for the election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Delhi i.e. 26th April.
However, the office of Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has not yet appointed the presiding officer for the elections. The job of appointing the Presiding Officer goes from the Municipal Secretary to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Commissioner and then to the Urban Development Secretary, Chief Secretary, Urban Development Minister and Chief Minister or to the Lieutenant Governor.
Delhi Urban Development Minister Saurabh Bhardwaj has said that the file for the appointment of the presiding officer was sent to the LG office, bypassing him. While official sources claimed that the LG office has not yet received the file from the Chief Minister’s Office. According to municipal officials, the election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor may be postponed due to non-appointment of the presiding officer. Last week, the Municipal Secretary had sought the approval of the Election Commission to conduct the elections of Mayor and Deputy Mayor as per the model code.
Trouble regarding the presiding officer
The Election Commission, in its reply to the letter of the Municipal Corporation Secretary, said that arrangements have been made for the general elections. The Commission has no objection to the proposal given therein from the MCC point of view. A senior official of the civic body said that till now we have not received any information about whether our request to appoint a presiding officer has been accepted or not? Only after getting some clarity will we be able to decide further action.
Saurabh Bhardwaj made this allegation
MCD said the mayor’s election was expected to be held in the first meeting of the House in April. If approval is not given, the elections are likely to be postponed. Official sources had earlier indicated that due to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal being in jail, the process of appointing the presiding officer may be affected or delayed. On Tuesday, Saurabh Bhardwaj wrote a letter to the LG alleging that the Chief Secretary had bypassed the file related to the appointment of the Presiding Officer and sent it directly to the LG office.
Saurabh Bhardwaj requested the LG to return the file to the Chief Secretary with instructions that it should be sent to the LG office through the Urban Development Minister. The mayor’s election is to be held in the first House meeting of the corporation on April 26 and has been mentioned in the civic body’s agenda for the House.
