Upendra Dwivedi will take command of the Indian Army from the afternoon of June 30. Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi PVSM, AVSM is currently serving as the Deputy Chief of the Indian Army. Dwivedi will replace the current Army Chief General Manoj Pandey PVSM, AVSM, VSM after his retirement on June 30. Upendra Dwivedi has been awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) and three GOC-in-C Commendation Cards.
Where has he served?
Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi was born on July 1, 1964. He was commissioned into the Indian Army Infantry (Jammu and Kashmir Rifles) on December 15, 1984. He has served in various command, staff, instructional and overseas appointments for nearly 40 years. Upendra Dwivedi has served in regiments (18 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles), brigades (26 Sector Assam Rifles), DIG Assam Rifles (Eastern) and 9 Corps. Upendra Dwivedi has served in important positions including Director General Infantry and General Officer Commanding in Chief (HQ Northern Command) from 2022-2024 before being appointed as the Deputy Chief of Army.

Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi is an alumnus of Sainik School Rewa, National Defense College and US Army War College. He has also studied at DSSC Wellington and Army War College, Mhow. Upendra Dwivedi holds M.Phil in Defence and Management and two Master’s degrees in Strategic Studies and Military Science.
