Union Home Minister Amit Shah has called a high-level meeting at 4 pm today to review the security situation in Manipur. Ethnic violence has been going on in Manipur for the last one year. Manipur CM N Virendra Singh along with state police and administration officials and top officials of the Union Home Ministry will be present in this meeting.
The previous day, Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey met Amit Shah.
Earlier on June 10, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat expressed concern over the violence in Manipur. Addressing a gathering of the Sangh in Nagpur, he said, ‘Manipur has been waiting for peace for the last one year. There was peace in Manipur 10 years ago. It seemed that the gun culture had ended there, but suddenly violence was seen in the state. The situation in Manipur has to be considered with priority and there is a need to rise above the election rhetoric and focus on the problems facing the nation. The unrest either flared up or was instigated, but Manipur is burning and people are facing this violent heat.’
Manipur has been smoldering for the last one year
Ethnic violence broke out in Manipur on May 3 last year. A tribal solidarity march was taken out in the hill districts of the state in protest against the demand for Scheduled Tribe status by the majority Meitei community. Violence broke out during this time. In this raging fire, more than 220 people and security personnel from both Kuki and Meitei communities were killed. The Meitei community in Manipur is about 53 percent. This community lives in the Imphal valley, while the tribal community includes Naga and Kuki castes. Their number is about 40 percent. All of them mainly live in hilly districts.
