Rome: Italian police have arrested the farm owner in connection with the death of an Indian worker after his hand was cut off by an agricultural tool. Prosecutors have given information about this. Prosecutors said that the farm owner left the Indian worker covered in blood and did not even call an ambulance. During this, the worker died due to excessive bleeding.
Protests in Italy
The worker was identified as Satnam Singh. The people of Italy are shocked by the death of Satnam Singh and agricultural unions and workers have started protests demanding better conditions at the workplace. In the protest, the workers called for an end to the system of exploiting migrant workers working at low wages in Italy’s agricultural industry.
Workers are treated cruelly
The country’s President Sergio Mattarella also reacted to the matter and said that workers like Singh are “treated cruelly” and agricultural workers in Italy often have to work in “inhuman” conditions. The matter was raised in the Parliament by Italy’s Labour Minister Marina Calderone. She had said, “An Indian agricultural worker who was the victim of a serious accident in the countryside of Latina has died and was left in very serious conditions…he has died.” She had said, “It was a barbaric act, the authorities are investigating and hope that those responsible will be punished.”
…life could have been saved
Latina prosecutors said in a statement that the Carabinieri police have arrested the farm owner Antonello Lovato. Forensic investigations revealed that Singh died due to “excessive bleeding”. Prosecutors said that the forensic report found that if Singh had received timely medical care, he “could have” survived. They said that Singh’s hand was cut off due to getting stuck in a ‘nylon-wrapping’ machine but Lovato did not call the ambulance immediately.
