France Election 2024: Big change in the second round of France elections, National Rally claiming its victory came third, President Macron-led coalition made a comeback and won 168 seats

There has been a major reshuffle in the French general election. The right-wing party National Rally, which was in first place in the first round, has reached the last position in the last round. According to the French Interior Ministry, the New Popular Front (NFP), a coalition of left parties, has won the maximum number of 182 seats. At the same time, the coalition led by President Macron, which was in third place in the first round, has made a comeback and won 168 seats.

The results of the runoff round are shocking for the right-wing party National Rally. After the results of the European Union elections last month, President Emmanuel Macron dissolved the National Assembly. After which Marine Le Pen’s party claimed to have gained power. This time the National Rally may have to be satisfied with just 143 seats. There are a total of 577 seats in the French Assembly and 289 seats are needed for a majority. Counting is going on for some seats.

But no party has achieved a majority yet and the next government is expected to be formed by a coalition. Amidst all this, there are reports of violence from the capital Paris, where people happy and angry with the results came out on the streets of the city. At many places, the police have also used tear gas to stop the protesters.

How will the new government be formed?

In case of not getting a majority, Macron and Left Alliance leader Jean-Luc Melanchon will have to form an alliance to come to power. After the first round, Macron’s party and the Left Alliance had vowed to stop the right-wing from coming to power at any cost. After which both the parties withdrew their party candidates in front of the winning candidates.

According to the French newspaper Le Monde, a total of 218 candidates withdrew from the race for the second phase. Of these, 130 were from the leftist alliance and 82 were from Macron’s centrist alliance.

Violence started after the results

As soon as the election results started coming, thousands of people gathered at Place de la Republique in Paris. According to media reports, some protesters clashed with the police, after which the police used tear gas. People angry with the results and celebrating after the results have come out on the streets. Many shops and banks in central Paris have been closed in view of the possibility of riots.
