Dubai: An oil tanker has sunk near Oman. Its 16 crew members are missing, including 13 Indians. The country’s Maritime Security Center said on Tuesday, a day after the oil tanker sank, that the missing people have not yet been found.

The crew of the Prestige Falcon included 13 Indian nationals and three Sri Lankans, the Omani center said in a post on social media platform X. The center told news agency Reuters that the ship is submerged and upside down. It did not confirm whether the ship was stationary or whether oil or oil products were leaking into the sea.

The tanker capsized near Duqm

Shipping data from LSEG showed that the tanker was headed to Yemen’s Aden port and capsized near Duqm, Oman’s major industrial port. Shipping data shows that the ship is a 117-meter-long oil product tanker built in 2007. Such small tankers are usually used for short coastal trips.

Omani authorities have launched search and rescue operations at the scene alongside maritime officials, Oman’s state news agency reported late Monday.

The port of Duqm is located on Oman’s southwestern coast, close to the sultanate’s major oil and gas mining projects, including a major oil refinery that is part of the vast industrial zone of Duqm, Oman’s largest single economic project.
