New Delhi: The Union Ministry of Education and the University Grants Commission (UGC) on Tuesday launched a project to prepare 22,000 books in Indian languages in the next 5 years. According to the Union Education Ministry, 22 thousand textbooks will be prepared in 22 regional languages of the country. For this, ‘Aasmita’ has been started in collaboration with the Indian Language Committee under the leadership of UGC. Along with this, a comprehensive initiative has also been taken to create a huge repository of multilingual dictionaries. At the same time, measures for instant translation, the facility of building a technical framework to enhance instant translation capabilities in Indian languages is also being provided.
3 important projects started on Tuesday
Union Education Secretary K. Sanjay Murthy launched these 3 important projects on Tuesday. According to the Union Education Secretary, technology as well as NETF and BBS will play a very big role in shaping all these projects. On Tuesday, the Ministry of Education organized an important workshop. More than 150 Vice Chancellors from across the country participated in it. The Vice Chancellors were divided into 12 brainstorming sessions, each of which was dedicated to planning and developing textbooks in 12 regional languages. The initial focus languages included Punjabi, Hindi, Sanskrit, Bengali, Urdu, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Odia.
Several important conclusions emerged after the deliberations
The groups were chaired by the respective Vice Chancellors of the nodal universities and their deliberations yielded valuable results. The key conclusions from the discussions included defining the creation of new textbooks in Indian languages, establishing standard terminology in 22 Indian languages for the books and identifying possible improvements to the current textbooks, emphasizing on Indian Knowledge System (IKS) as one of the components, combining practical and theoretical knowledge.
Vice Chancellors of more than 150 universities attended the workshop
Minister of State for Education Dr Sukanta Majumdar inaugurated this one-day workshop for Vice Chancellors on writing textbooks in Indian languages for higher education in New Delhi. The workshop was jointly organised by UGC and Bharatiya Bhasha Samiti (BBS). K. Sanjay Murthy, Secretary, Higher Education Department, Ministry of Education, Prof. Chamu Krishna Shastri, Chairman, Bharatiya Bhasha Samiti, Prof. M. Jagadeesh Kumar, Chairman, University Grants Commission, Vice Chancellors of more than 150 universities, eminent educationists and other dignitaries were also present on the occasion.
Majumdar said, students should acquire knowledge in their mother tongue
Sukanta Majumdar highlighted the importance of preparing study material in Indian languages for various higher education courses. He said that the education system should reflect the vast linguistic diversity of the country and ensure that students acquire knowledge in their mother tongue. Dr. Majumdar said that Indian languages are a testimony to the ancient history of the nation and the wisdom passed down from generations.
