A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court against superstition and witchcraft, stating that some of the superstitious practices are cruel, inhuman and exploitative.

New Delhi: A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court, requesting to direct the Center and the states to take appropriate steps to eliminate superstition, witchcraft and other similar evil practices. The petition states that an anti-superstition and witchcraft law is needed to eliminate unscientific practices prevalent in the society. It has also been requested to take steps to prevent fake saints from exploiting innocent people.

The advocate said this in the petition filed

The petition filed by advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay also requests to direct the Center and the states to take steps to develop scientific thinking, humanity and a sense of investigation among citizens in accordance with the spirit of Article 51A of the Constitution.

This article of the Constitution is related to fundamental duties. The petition states that some practices full of superstition are cruel, inhuman and exploitative and there is a dire need to make laws to curb them. It also alleged that many people and organisations were resorting to superstition and witchcraft to convert people on a large scale.
