According to Shiv Puran, Lord Shiva drank poison that came out of the sea on the request of the gods and the behest of Mother Parvati. At that time, he was in a dilemma after taking all the poison in his mouth. Actually, he could not let the poison go into his stomach, because Lord Narayana was already seated there.

It was here that Shiva performed Samadhi

Similarly, if he had spat out the poison, the whole universe would have been destroyed. In such a situation, Lord Shiva held that poison in his throat. Due to this, Bholenath’s throat turned blue and he became Neelkanth. Due to the poison, Shiva’s throat started burning a lot. Due to this, he became restless and started running in all the three worlds. In this sequence, when he reached Kalinjar, he got some peace, so Bholenath performed Samadhi here. The present Shivling is at the same place where Bholenath had meditated.
