Paris: Amid preparations for the Olympics, an Australian woman has been gang-raped; Paris police have launched an investigation into the woman’s allegation and security has been tightened.

An Australian woman has alleged gang rape amid the Olympic Games starting in Paris on July 26. French police have launched an investigation after a 25-year-old Australian woman alleged gang rape. The woman has alleged that five men raped her in the Pigalle district of central Paris. According to local media, the woman took refuge in a nearby kebab shop, looking distressed and her clothes partially torn, prompting restaurant staff to call for help.

So far, police have not made any arrests in the case, but prosecutors have classified the case as “gang rape”, prompting an investigation.

The incident took place just days before the opening of the 2024 Olympics in Paris, raising concerns about security in the city during this high-profile international event, which will see athletes from around the world participating.

Police launches investigation into gang rape

According to French newspaper Le Parisien, following the alleged rape, firefighters attended to the woman and she was then taken to Bichat Hospital for a medical check-up. The Paris prosecutor’s office said law enforcement is investigating the claims made by the woman and examining CCTV footage from the area.

It said the investigation into the alleged gang rape on the night of July 19-20 has been handed over to the second judicial police district.

Security tightened in Paris ahead of Olympics

The incident comes at a time when Paris has stepped up its security measures ahead of the Olympics, which begin on Friday. A significant police force has been deployed across the city to ensure public safety, with armed officers patrolling key areas including the Seine River.

According to media reports, security has been beefed up around popular landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower. A special permit issued by the police will be required to access it.

With thousands of athletes and millions of spectators expected to attend the Olympics, French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin praised law enforcement for maintaining security amid potential threats.
