The controversy in India over Mamata Banerjee’s comment on the deteriorating situation in Bangladesh had not even stopped and the Bangladesh government has also reacted to it. Taking this comment of the West Bengal Chief Minister seriously, the neighboring country has sent an official note to New Delhi. Bangladesh Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud said in his statement, “I want to say with all respect that we have very good and cordial relations with West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee. But this statement has the scope of creating confusion. We have sent a note to the Government of India on this issue. ”
Recently, after seeing the brutality of the police during the demonstrations in Bangladesh, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee had said that if the helpless people of Bangladesh knock on the door of West Bengal, she will definitely help them. After this statement of hers, politics has heated up in India too, many leaders of the BJP government have raised questions on her statement.
What did Mamata say?
The Chief Minister of West Bengal said on the occasion of ‘Shaheed Diwas’ in Kolkata on July 21, “I will not say much about Bangladesh, because it is a different country. The central government will present its side on this. But if the helpless people there knock at the door of Bengal, then we will give them shelter. There is also a proposal of the UN. Neighbors will respect refugees. ”
After this statement, West Bengal Governor CV Anand Bose had sought a response from the Chief Minister on her comment. In a statement issued from the Governor’s Office, it was said that it is the job of the central government to give shelter to refugees coming from abroad, Mamata Banerjee making a public statement on this is very serious and is a constitutional violation.
Deteriorating situation in Bangladesh
Protests have been going on in Bangladesh for the last one month against the quota in jobs given to the families involved in the Liberation Movement. These protests turned violent when the student wing of Sheikh Hasina’s party attacked the protesting students. Many people have died in these protests. After which the Supreme Court of Bangladesh intervened and reduced the quota to 30 percent.
