Heavy rains lashed Gujarat on Wednesday, causing the water level in rivers to rise and dams to overflow. This inundated many parts of the state and cut off connectivity to several villages, officials said. Officials said at least eight people were killed in rain-related incidents and more than 800 people were evacuated to safer places. They said normal life was disrupted due to heavy rains in Gujarat districts like Vadodara, Surat, Bharuch and Anand since morning, forcing officials to declare a holiday in schools and colleges at some places. Apart from this, rail services were also affected in some areas.

State Relief Commissioner Alok Kumar Pandey said, “Eight people have died due to heavy rains in many parts of Gujarat during the last 24 hours. We have evacuated 826 people to safer places during this period. Considering the current situation, we have deployed 20 teams of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and 11 teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) in the affected districts. He said that in view of widespread rains and ‘red alert’ of extremely heavy rains issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for several districts, control rooms are working round the clock to monitor the situation and help the stranded people.
Sardar Sarovar dam is 54 percent full
Pandey said that fresh flow of water is being received in all the 206 major dams of the state and Sardar Sarovar dam, the largest in Gujarat, is now 54 percent full. In the rain-affected districts of Vadodara, Surat, Bharuch and Anand, the administration has deployed personnel of NDRF, SDRF and local fire brigades to evacuate people from the flooded areas and take them to safer places. According to data from the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), Borsad taluka of Anand district received 354 mm rainfall in a span of 12 hours (between 6 am and 6 pm).
