Manmohan Singh Death: Dr. Manmohan Singh, who led the economy on the path of progress on the strength of his economic reforms, died yesterday at the age of 92, 7 days of national mourning in the country

Manmohan Singh Death: Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh died on Thursday (December 26, 2024). He was admitted to the emergency department of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi at around 8 pm after he complained of breathing problems.

Manmohan Singh, who was the Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, retired from the Rajya Sabha earlier this year, ending his political innings in the Upper House after 33 years. India’s only Sikh Prime Minister reached the Rajya Sabha in 1991, four months after taking oath as Finance Minister in the government led by P.V. Narasimha Rao in June 1991.

He represented Assam for five terms in the Upper House and moved to Rajasthan in 2019. His last speech in Parliament was against demonetisation, in which he called it “organised loot and legalised plunder”. According to news agency PTI, Manmohan Singh said at an event in 2021, “Unemployment is high and the informal sector is in shambles, this crisis has arisen from the ill-considered decision of demonetisation taken in 2016.”

Born on 26 September 1932 in Punjab, Manmohan Singh did his graduation and post-graduation in economics from Punjab University. Dr. Manmohan Singh completed the Economics Tripos from the University of Cambridge in 1957. After this, he took a D.Phil. degree in Economics from the University of Oxford in 1962.

After teaching at Punjab University and Delhi School of Economics, he joined the Government of India as an economic advisor in the Ministry of Commerce in 1971. Dr. Manmohan Singh was promoted to the post of Chief Economic Advisor in the Ministry of Finance in 1972.

After a short tenure in the UNCTAD Secretariat, he was appointed Secretary-General of the South Commission in Geneva from 1987-1990. Manmohan Singh also held the positions of Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, Advisor to the Prime Minister and Chairman of the University Grants Commission.

Dr. Manmohan Singh will be remembered for his economic reforms, which promoted India’s rapid economic growth. We mourn the demise of Dr. Singh. We will always remember his dedication to bringing the United States and India closer.”
