Manmohan Singh Died: Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the father of economic reforms, was cremated with state honors at Nigam Bodh Ghat on Saturday (28 December 2024). Politics is in full swing regarding his funeral site and memorial site. Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has accused the central government of insulting former PM Manmohan Singh over his funeral.
‘The central government insulted Manmohan Singh’
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi posted on Instagram, “The current government has completely insulted the great son of Mother India and the first Prime Minister of the Sikh community, Dr. Manmohan Singh, by getting his last rites done at Nigam Bodh Ghat today. He was the Prime Minister of India for a decade, during his time the country became an economic superpower and his policies are still the support of the poor and backward classes of the country.” ‘Former PM deserves highest honour’
Congress MP Rahul Gandhi said, “Till date, respecting the dignity of all former Prime Ministers, their last rites were performed at authorised Samadhi Sthals, so that every person can pay tribute by paying last respects without any inconvenience. Dr. Manmohan Singh deserves our highest honour (Bharat Ratna) and Samadhi Sthal. The government should have shown respect to this great son of the country and his glorious community.”
Earlier on Friday (27 December 2024), Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge had written a letter to the Modi government demanding separate land for the memorial of former PM Manmohan Singh. Congress is demanding a separate memorial for Manmohan Singh like other Prime Ministers. The Congress President had also spoken to Home Minister Amit Shah regarding this.
Congress got the support of Akali Dal and AAP
Akali Dal has also joined Congress in this demand. On the other hand, former Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal has expressed surprise at the cremation of former PM Manmohan Singh at Nigam Bodh Ghat. In a post on Instagram, he said, I am shocked that the cremation of former Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh was done at Nigam Bodh Ghat. Before this, the cremation of all the Prime Ministers of India was done at Raj Ghat. The BJP government could not even provide 1000 yards of land for the cremation and burial of Dr. Manmohan Singh ji.
