A Mumbai court in Maharashtra sentenced 8 Pakistani nationals to 20 years of imprisonment. The court has sentenced Pakistani nationals to this punishment in the 2015 drug seizure case. In fact, in the year 2015, the Indian Coast Guard arrested the accused from a boat carrying 232 kg of heroin worth Rs 6.96 crore near the Gujarat coast. Special Judge for NDPS Act cases Shashikant Bangar convicted these eight people for the crimes committed under the anti-drugs law. The accused were sentenced to a maximum of 20 years in jail under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Along with this, the court also imposed a fine of Rs 2 lakh on each.
Special Public Prosecutor Sumesh Punjwani, while seeking maximum punishment for the accused, said that this could be a lesson for other drug smugglers. However, the defense lawyer argued that a lenient approach should be adopted. After hearing both the sides, the court refused to show leniency and awarded maximum punishment to all the eight accused.
Satellite phones, GPS navigation charts were recovered at the time of arrest
According to the prosecution, the boat from which these accused were arrested had 11 drums containing 20 plastic bags containing wheatish brown powder. It said that the contents of each packet were examined, which revealed that it was heroin. Three satellite phones, GPS navigation charts and other electronic devices were also recovered from the eight Pakistani nationals. They were later handed over to the Yellow Gate police in south Mumbai.
