KANPUR: A 25-year-old PhD student allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the sixth floor of a residential building on the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur campus on Tuesday afternoon. This is the second suicide case on the campus within the last 23 days, raising serious concerns once again about students’ mental health and academic pressure.
According to officials, the deceased has been identified as Ramswaroop Ishram, a research scholar in the Earth Sciences department at IIT-Kanpur. He was living with his wife, Manju, and three-year-old daughter in apartment AA-21 of the New SBRA building on the campus. He was immediately rushed to a private hospital after the incident, where doctors declared him dead.
Had undergone counseling multiple times
Kanpur Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) SM Qasim Abidi said that upon receiving information about the incident, the Kalyanpur police station team, along with forensic experts, reached the spot and collected evidence. He said, “Preliminary investigations indicate that the student had been suffering from mental stress for a long time. He had also undergone counseling several times before.” The police have sent the body for post-mortem examination and further legal proceedings are underway.

The DCP also said that the deceased’s family members have been informed about the incident. As part of the investigation, the police are also questioning the deceased’s wife to clarify all aspects of the incident. Ramswaroop Ishram was originally from Churu district in Rajasthan.
Expressing grief over the incident, IIT-Kanpur Director Manindra Agrawal said that the institute has lost a promising and talented research scholar. He said that this incident is extremely tragic and the institute is serious about the mental health of its students.
